About this stotra
द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंग स्तोत्र में 13 श्लोक है और इस स्तोत्र में भारत में स्थित भगवान शिव के बारह ज्योतिर्लिंगों का वर्णन किया गया है।
1. Somnath Jyotirlinga, Gujarat — Located in Saurashtra, Gujarat. This temple was destroyed six times but always rebuilt. It is believed Chandra Dev (the Moon) built it after being freed from Daksha Prajapati’s curse. The Moon and Rohini worshipped Lord Shiva here and regained the Moon’s glow. Timings: 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM. Aarti at 7:00 AM, 12:00 Noon, 7:00 PM.
2. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, Andhra Pradesh — On Shri Shaila mountain on the banks of the Krishna river. Known as “Kailash of the South”. According to Shiva Purana, Lord Ganesha married before Kartikeya, who angrily went to Kraunch mountain. Lord Shiva assumed the form of a Jyotirlinga and resided there as Mallikarjuna (Mallika = Parvati, Arjuna = Shiva). Timings: 4:30 AM – 10:00 PM.
3. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Madhya Pradesh — In Ujjain on the banks of river Kshipra. This is the only self-existent (Swayambhu) Jyotirlinga. A five-year-old boy named Shrikar, inspired by King Chandrasena’s devotion, began worshipping a stone as Shiva. Pleased by his devotion, Shiva took the form of Mahakaleshwar. It is one of the seven Mukti-Sthalas. Timings: 4:00 AM – 11:00 PM.
4. Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, Madhya Pradesh — On an Om-shaped island in the Narmada river. After Devas were defeated by Danavas, they prayed to Shiva who emerged as Omkareshwar and defeated the demons. Timings: 5:00 AM – 9:35 PM.
5. Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga, Jharkhand — In Deoghar. Demon king Ravana meditated and received twelve Jyotirlingas with the condition they would root where placed. On the way, Lord Vishnu placed the lingam on the ground. When Ravana tried to lift it, he shredded his nine heads. Shiva joined them as a Vaidya (healer), hence the name. Timings: 4:00 AM – 3:30 PM, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM.
6. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, Maharashtra — In the Sahyadri region near Pune. Kumbhakarna’s son Bhima, seeking revenge against Vishnu, obtained powers from Brahma and began destroying the earth. Shiva fought and defeated him. The sweat from Shiva during this battle became the Bhima river. Timings: 4:30 AM – 9:30 PM.
7. Rameshwar Jyotirlinga, Tamil Nadu — On Rameshwaram island. Lord Rama, while traveling to Lanka, made a sand lingam and worshipped Shiva for blessings to defeat Ravana. The temple is famous for its long corridors and 36 theerthams. Timings: 5:00 AM – 1:00 AM, 3:00 AM – 9:00 PM.
8. Ghushmeshwar (Grishneshwar) Jyotirlinga, Aurangabad, Maharashtra — Near the Ellora caves. A couple Sudharm and Ghusma had a son, but Sudeha (jealous co-wife) threw the baby into a lake. Sudharm prayed and Shiva returned the child, revealing Sudeha’s deeds. Sudharm’s generosity pleased Shiva, who resided as Ghushmeshwar. Timings: 5:30 AM – 9:30 PM.
9. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, Gujarat — Near Dwarka. A devotee named Supriya was imprisoned by demon Daaruka. She advised fellow prisoners to chant “Om Namah Shivaya”. When the demon came to kill her, Shiva appeared and destroyed him. This Jyotirlinga grants protection from poison. Timings: 5:00 AM – 9:00 PM.
10. Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh — On the banks of the Ganges. The most prominent Jyotirlinga. It is believed this lingam cannot be harmed even during the final dissolution. Those whose bodies are cremated here attain liberation. Timings: 2:30 AM – 11:00 PM (multiple aartis throughout the day).
11. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, Nashik, Maharashtra — 30 km from Nashik, source of the Godavari river. This is the only Jyotirlinga where the Tridev (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) reside together. Sage Gautam, after accidentally killing a cow, prayed to Shiva who asked Ganga to flow through the land to purify it. Timings: 5:30 AM – 9:00 PM.
12. Kedarnath Jyotirlinga, Uttarakhand — At 12,000 ft in the Himalayas. One of the Panch Kedar. Open only April–November due to weather. Pleased by Nara and Narayana (incarnations of Vishnu), Shiva permanently resides here. Timings: 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM (seasonal).
